Getting Ready for Baby

I spent most of yesterday washing and sorting baby clothes from Myles that are now for Cole. I'd put stuff away in boxes and SORT OF grouped them by size, but not stringently. Now that I've got to reuse them, I had to really be sure of what I already had. Wow - we've got a lot of stuff. And at my baby shower, people were really into newborn clothes. So he'll probably never have to repeat and outfit because I don't really remember Myles wearing newborn clothes for longer than my a month tops. Can't really remember, but I think he segued into 0-3 months and 3 months stuff really quickly. He was like the 90% percentile for a long time.

So I took everything out of all of the boxes, and started making piles, which Myles tried to sabotage of course. Then I reboxed it, made lists to put on the outside of the box, and stacked stuff so that the stuff that would be climate appropriate earliest is on top and the stuff that wouldn't be until later (of that size bracket) would be on bottom. It should be fairly easy now to route stuff in and out of Cole's section, which is pretty small. Mark doesn't think we need another dresser - which I disagree with, which is partially why I'm readying stuff so early. Once he sees how much space Cole's stuff takes up, even with it being only 1 size at a time, I think he'll see that he's going to need his own dresser. Part of the problem is real estate - Myles and Cole are sharing a room and he doesn't think there's enough room. But I think if we swap the chest we use as a changing table for a dresser with a built in changing table, we'll be fine. It was cute that we got that one for free by painting and repurposing it, but we're going to have to spend some bucks at a certain point.

Renting our house was a great, great lesson. We'd both hoped to be moved into a bigger place by the time Cole was born, but I didn't see much better in the same price range on Craigslist and he'd JUST started a new job. Every baby we have, he's just started a new job! LOL. So, the timing didn't really let us, and without knowing what his commute was going to be like, or if there'd be any commute at all (working from home now) it didn't make sense to me to pick a geographic area to live in. Also, I refused to move pregnant again. I was a pack horse last pregnancy, and I always wonder if moving at 6 months contributed to bedrest at 7 months. I wanted to avoid bedrest like the plague this time, so I've taken it intentionally easy. If I'm tired, I sit down. If it hurts, I don't do it. And it's working great. I'm almost 33 weeks now and no complications like last time. Yay!

But as I was saying, renting this house was a cheap education. I've quickly learned what I don't want in a house. First lesson: square footage means nothing - check the layout. We've got lots of square footage, but lots of wasted space. The 2 doorways in Myles' room and lack of hallway makes one whole wall unusable. If Myles and Cole had the exact same room, just with only 1 door in the middle, instead of 2 walkthroughs, we'd gain a wall to put a toddler bed on. If we get desperate, I suppose we could block off a door, but without a hallway, the walk to his room would be far. You need quick access to the baby from our bedroom, but you also need quick access to the bathroom for cleaning. I think the house might have had a hallway originally that was stolen for the living room. The living room, which is disproportionately big. It's as if the person who lived here, only had a bed in their room and no clothes. They lived 100% in the living rooms. And it's great for entertaining, but you live your life 95% with your family and maybe 5% with parties, even if you're a big partier.

Biggest complaint other than the one bathroom, small closets, missing kitchen cabinets, which are all pretty normal for a house of this age and in this neighborhood, so no big surprise, is that I can't cook and watch my child at the same time. I never understood how important having one of those open kitchens that flows into the den or family room was. But now that I'm trying to cook and Myles is out doing mayhem in the family room, 2 rooms away, I appreciate that layout. We rented this house as singletons with a baby on the way, but we had no idea how we'd actually flow with a child. Now that we have an idea, it'll help a lot with the next house. I'm just happy we didn't buy a place like this and be stuck in it forever. It's great to get a test run. I have some mommy friends who bought before their babies were born and made compromises they didn't know they were making, and now in a depressed economy, can't sell for another 5-7 years. 5-7 years in baby time is forever! It felt smart to NOT buy when we moved because we could tell it was too inflated and California's economy didn't seem to support the home prices, but then when things started to crash to prices cheaper than when we moved, it felt a little bad to not be buying. Now, I'm fairly okay with it. As long as we can find a place with another bedroom to rent that'll last another 3 years, and hopefully the real estate prices STAY down, that'll be the best time for us to think about buying. By then, I could probably get a full time job or something, but staring down the barrel of another newborn, nope! I've got another 2 years of limited employment ahead.

The only difference is that now Mark works from home, so it'd be easier to get an in house babysitter (teenager or something) to come after school and sit with Myles (with Mark in the house) and I could teach more voice students during the week. And, the 2nd child never stays a baby as long as the first, is what I'm hearing. So Cole will probably be eating solids and walking way earlier than Myles. So who knows. All I know is that I feel good about our lifestyle at the moment, excited about the future. Not TOO frightened about the aspect of handling 2 kids and very happy that Myles is going to have a baby brother to love.

Bored and emotional

I've had a rough week this week. MY hormones are crazy and I am a different person temporarily. I know of one particular crazy girl who I defriended from FB who was an acquaintance in our mommy group who was always paranoid about everything. I now wonder how exhausting it must be to be her! Luckily so far, the pregnant crazies don't last very long with me - it's a couple of days here or there, and usually when it's happening I know that it's happening, not that it makes me feel that much better in the moment.

I see a bunch of two year olds walking around with pacifiers and for the first time, I'm glad Myles didn't take to it. Not that I didn't try! He just rejected it when he was about 4 months old. Along with the bottle - ugh! But whatever, he's off the boob and the pacifier now and he looks like a big boy and I like that. 2 isn't too old for a pacifier, it just LOOKS too old to people who can't gauge kids age. It just looks like a kid walking around with a pacifier, not a baby.

I'm watching 2 kids today, but it was almost 3! That would've been interesting. I would've just worn the 5 month old in a carrier and the 2 year olds sort of entertain themselves. I just have to check in with Myles often about whether he's got to potty or not.

Updates

I have a couple of cute videos to post, but they take like an hour to upload and tend to get stalled in the process, so it's hard to be motivated to post them. One I took today of Myles watching the street trucks repaving our streets. Heavy duty, multi-ton trucks took over our street this week. I awoke to a sound way worse than the 4 earthquakes we've experienced here and more consistent. The whole house rattled to the core for hours. Finally, I found an upside: Myles likes trucks. I opened the front door and we peeped out the screen door to see the trucks moving up and down the street laying the first layer of stuff. Surprisingly, the noise was only about 2 percent worse with the door open - the vibrations cause more noise than anything.

Myles was curious, but also a little hesitant, dare I say afraid? This kid is absolutely fearless in general. Whether it's wrestling 7 year-olds, or dogs, he's generally very brave. But these noisy trucks had him peeping around the corner and half-shutting the door. Cute.

Another mommy who's 6 weeks less pregnant than me, with twins, dropped off her little boy for us to watch while she did the big ultrasound, where you get to look at all the organs and everything important. I think it's the most fun Myles has ever had with another kid, by virtue of the fact that he's just more mature now. The other boy, A.R. is an excellent sportsmen. He can throw a basketball from a couple feet away and still make it into the hoop and he's a rough and tumble boy in general. He likes wrestling and he and Myles get along swimmingly. But Myles was just so happy he was here. He didn't interact much with me once the kid was around, and he didn't play alongside him, he played with him. That's sort of new. They played cars, Myles showed him how to climb the slide alone, they sat in the house part underneath the slide (that Myles never plays with alone.) If I had kids over more often, I wouldn't need as many toys. They played basketball for at least 40 minutes. And peer pressure can be fabulous. Myles sat at the table while A.R. ate his PB&J and despite the fact that Myles has decided that he hates peanut butter and jelly, he pretended to like it, saying yum and ate one of the crusts for like 5 minutes, making absolutely no progress because he really was pretend eating it more than anything else.

He also had ice cream for the first time today. My baby! First spoonful, he was so angry with me and outraged. He tried to get it out of his mouth but he couldn't before it dissolved. I guess I should have told him it was cold first, huh? Once he got over the temperature, he came back for more and had like 8 or 9 spoonfuls before I cut him off. Loves it now. He seemed to be so good with dairy the last couple of weeks that I've been upping the ante. Last night, he had quiche for dinner, which he loved, this morning I put real milk in his oatmeal and he still ate it and so ice cream didn't seem much of a stretch. They say that most kids outgrow the milk intolerance by their 2nd birthday and Myles is no exception. Phew!

I need to remember to start using and drinking real milk again because according to my BabyCenter Welcome to the Week 29 email, the baby's bones are starting to harden and calcify now and his calcium and dietary needs will increase from here on out. So back onto real milk for me. I've already been back on cheese, but I was used to rice milk...

Baby Cole has quieted down the last two days. His kicks are more gentle. Last weekend he was going to town in there! He still likes to act up right at bedtime, making it very hard for me to go to sleep. Speaking of which, I'm going to try to do right now. I was up late partially because babysitting today made us nap super late, and also because I'm helping Mark set up all his equipment for his home-working for his job. Makes me miss doing computer tech support - not that I ever was officially hired or paid to do that, ever. I'm good at it and unlike most techies, I can sort of use social skills to figure things out that the borderline-Asperger's guys miss. I like unraveling problems and figuring stuff out.

Alright, catch you later.

Old me, meet new me

Today, I about to take a shower with Myles. We are both naked, I've paused to clean the tub before we get in and the phone rings. It's a weird number, so I answer and it's a guy who works at Sennheiser who I did a demonstration gig for before. He says that he's in the car with the other guy from Tahiti who knows me from having met me at a music conference. I indeed know of whom he's speaking. He says that the guy is trying to put together some album recorded in Tahiti to promote his studio and Tahiti itself and might invite a couple of people I know, and asks if I'm interested. By now, an impatient Myles is running around chasing me saying "booty, booty," trying to whack me on my butt. Luckily, his "booty" sounds like "body" or "botty" so it's just nonsense noise to them.

He then hands the phone to the main guy who I met at least 3 years ago at a conference here in LA. So now, I'm trying to have a conversation, in French, about possibly going to Tahiti to sing later in the year (the baby will be here by then) and I've put Myles into his tub, but now he's loudly blowing bubbles in his bathwater. I can't really walk away because I want to make sure he's alright, but he's motorboating like a champ in his tub.

This is the stuff of my life. Every now and then, vestiges of my old life pop up and I've got to try and integrate it into the new chaos that IS. Mommy-me and singing-me collide from time to time. For instance, we were sort of canned from our restaurant gig until I'm not pregnant anymore, because the old-school, old-world Italian owner is scared of having a 'mama' onstage this pregnant because I might deliver or get hurt. Dude, really? I'm more nervous than you. I was already going to quit at the end of February which is still in the 7th month, but he cut us off at month 6. So now I get to lay around, doing nothing adult for myself for the next 3 months. I really liked getting to be a grown-up for that couple of days a month, but now, nope! Also, I liked my baby hearing all the music. Apparently it made Myles a serious music lover and I didn't even gig that much with him.

It's comical, it's frustration, but beyond all else, it's reality.

Xmas with Myles

Myles got tons of stuff for xmas. I'll have to post everything, but I'm going to do it bit by bit since the video takes forever to upload!

Here he is playing with a Thomas the train set that his Great Aunt Margaret sent him from England:

Pre-xmas gremlins

My inlaws are coming to town for the holidays- actually they are already here, but we were preparing for them this weekend when the following mishaps happened:

Sunday - Mark complains of feeling ill and later spends a couple of hours in the bathroom and takes an expected nap that lasts hours. He thought it was an upset stomach from a zinc lozenge he took. Pam thought it might be a virus. Then at about 5 o'clock, Myles coughs, then starts to projectile vomit in the living room. I yell to Mark, who is then in the bathroom still, it's not the zinc lozenge, Pam's right, it's the stomach flu. My plan to go to my former boss' housewarming/holiday party were squashed. I figured with a 6 hour party window, I'd be able to make it at SOME time, but nope. Mark was dressed in a sweatsuit, covered with a robe, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket and turned the heat up to 75 as he snoozed upright on the sofa for most of the night until about 10 when he got up to go to bed and wasn't cold anymore. Mark spent so much time in the loo today, that I had to pee in a disposable baby cup in the laundry room twice. Way to kick off the Christmas season!

Myles seems not upset about the puking, but Mark is getting it every which way. Myles pukes 5 times before bed, and only whimpers and appears upset at the very last occurence. Before that, he was so unconcerned that he didn't even stop watching a commercial on tv as I leaned him over his baby tub which became a portable vomitoire in the living room.

I don't trust Myles to sleep alone, so I sleep upright in the recliner on the leather sofa (easy clean up in case of accidents) with him. He vomits once at 1 am (doesn't awake for the event) and sleeps soundly the rest of the night. Monday morning, Mark is still wiped out. He didn't even get that much time off of work from Christmas, so it' very inconvenient to get sick 2 days before his vacation. He tries to go in midday but my midday it's apparent that ain't happening. So much for help cleaning the house. Myles gets his appetite back for breakfast although he's picky again by lunch. Mark recovers a little more slowly.

By Tuesday, they are all good. It's almost as if it never happened. The illness never hit me and I'm determined to not let anybody else get it, so I'm spraying lysol on every fixture and using hand sanitizer at every turn. Our leaky faucet that was supposed to be fixed on Friday is still not fixed. The plumber is scheduled to come on Tuesday first thing in the morning - after I call and complain about how many times they've dropped the ball to bring it this close to Christmas. I started the process two weeks out and they've screwed off and are now up against the wall, repairing on the same day our family's flight gets in.

8:47 am, plumber gets here. Great. By 11, I'm a little worried. He tells me that a pipe broke, so that while it looks like he's installed the new faucet, there's a gaping hole under the sink. There is black soot everywhere on the fixtures and stuff I've cleaned the day before. Luckily I had the presence of mind to take my rugs out. A bag of toothbrushes and contact lens supplies has been sooted up and appears to have breathing holes where some soot got into it, so I've got to see what can be salvaged later. I remove more stuff and take it to Mark's room. Of course, I see this AFTER he leaves. He leaves it as is and tells me another set of plumbers will come later. LATER? Mark's parent's plane gets in at 12 and his sister's in another 15 after that. Yikes!

The new plumbers arrive at 12, fix the pipe, grease monkey everything up, get black oil on the bottom of our white fabric shower curtain, etc.

I can't actually clean any of it up because by now I've figured out why my child's been behaving like a demon all day. He head butted me VERY hard in my spine earlier, regretted it and said, "mama" and started to pat my back! How does he know how to do that? Who knows. But he'd been running up to Max and letting out an ear-piercing shriek in order to make Max run and otherwise torturing me and the dogs all day. So by now, my neighbor has volunteered to take Myles for a bit so that I can recover from the impending nervous breakdown, but I can't give him to her hungry, I try to feed him some more. No dice.

Now, he's crying nonstop. He already refused vegetable soup and now he's ignoring peanut butter and jelly, and refusing drink. Finally, he puts his hand up to his mouth and tries to undress me to nurse - which he's been not doing for at least a month and a half, so I figure out that he's teething. I find it miraculous, because he just finished cutting more teeth a couple of weeks ago and he's only got room for one more molar per quadrant at this point. He's got 16 out of 20 teeth, and I thought the gods of teething or at least the gods of mayhem would allow us a break. Nope.

He's teething. Oh well, at least it means he has an excuse for his out-of-character, horrible behavior. I give him ibuprofen, pry his mouth open long enough to stick some Ambesol on his back gums where I do feel some activity below the gums and before my hand is out of his mouth, he's asleep in my arms. Good. I'm on the phone with the neighbor still, and I try to put him down and he screams bloody murder and continues to do so for the next 3 hours every time I shift, sneeze, recline or try to escape. Finally at 5:30 I realize that he's never going to let me put him down and I might as well stop trying and just take a nap til Mark gets home. Luckily for me, my inlaws are not only the best people ever, they are also very tired people after getting here and eating, so they haven't called back yet to say, "come pick us up!" So I sleep until 6:30 when Mark gets in. We call them, they say that they are pooped and we say that Myles is cranky - the understatement of the year. Since Mark is home, he's being social, yet still breaking out in a cry every 4 minutes. He's trying to be social, but still suffering. Mark leaves the house to fetch dinner, since obviously, I'm not making any and haven't had a chance to prepare anything beforehand.

Food makes everybody more happy. And all seems well until Myles says, "bug." We think he couldn't know what he's saying, but, nope, he's right. There's an ant on the wall. Mark smashes one and Myles follows suit and more keep streaming out of the light switch. We spend the next hour, not watching our Netflix movie that we didn't get past the credits on. Instead we spend it spraying orange/lemon spray on the ants and killing them. I'm pregnant, so we can't use the good stuff which stinks anyhow.

I just can't believe how busy the little gremlins are right now. But it's just a good thing because we have a really good family. I'm so grateful that they are staying in a hotel this time - it's taken about 90% of the pressure off. We can handle 2 guests, but not 4. And the one bathroom is even more of a problem when I'm pregnant, since I want to pee every 30 minutes! So with 6 adults in our house, we would've been slammed. Next house will be bigger, I promise, but for now, we're in a lil' house built in the 50's and it shows, from breaking pipes, to becoming an ant haven every time in rains.

Thanksgiving

Myles had lots to pay attention to at Aunt Olivia's. He saw this Rihanna-esque girl and was fascinated. He was especially fixated on her earrings. He saw another girl later and followed her around like a puppy until he met another little boy who was 3.

Little Todd wasn't that interesting until his dad turned on the flashing lights inside his sneakers. Then Myles chased him around (she's got a square, track shaped hallway) for the next hour or so, until they found the secret room with the big boys...

who were playing video games. They were suspiciously quiet, so I went to find my baby and voila, Myles and Todd were transfixed by the tv set while the teenagers played some violent fighting game. What a boy.

Here's an action shot of him rounding the corner in glee when he was still chasing Todd.

He loves seeing the pictures I've taken.

He likes to try on daddy's glasses. Uh oh!

He looks like Jonathan Lipnicki from Jerry Maguire!
